The Highland Group Celebrates Women in Construction Week

The Highland Group celebrated Women in Construction Week: March 7-13, 2021. Founded by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), this week was created to bring awareness to the opportunities for women throughout the construction industry. The NAWIC estimates that out of the 11 million construction jobs in the United States, only about 9% are currently filled by women.

“The construction industry has a responsibility to promote the opportunities for women in all aspects of construction,” said C. Scott Shamburger, President & CEO, The Highland Group. “The Highland Group irrevocably supports the National Association of Women, and we are honored to have one of our own at the forefront of this cause,” he continued.

Shamburger is referring to Katie Fowler, Project Coordinator at The Highland Group, who is launching a new chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) in Huntsville, Alabama. According to Fowler, “I like working in the construction industry because a lot of it is problem-solving and finding creative solutions. The women I work with at The Highland Group are unstoppable, and I am excited to educate and encourage other women to join our industry.”

There are currently more than 115 NAWIC chapters across the country, and each chapter offers its members education, support and networking to help advance their careers in construction, build their technical skills, and become more effective in leadership. All women working in or adjacent to construction are eligible for membership. For more information on NAWIC or membership visit www.nawic.org.
